Founded around its feudal fortress, La Roche-en-Ardenne has preserved its authentic character through the centuries. The town was the scene of fierce fighting during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, traces of which are still visible today. History of La Roche-en-Ardenne

11th century

Castle foundation

Construction of the first fortress by the Lords of La Roche. Strategic position to control the Ourthe Valley and the route to Liège.

1331

Charter of franchise

John the Blind, Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia, grants a charter of franchise to the inhabitants, enabling the town’s development.

17th century

Sieges and destructions

The castle is besieged and damaged repeatedly during wars between France and Spain, then France and the Netherlands.

1721

Great fire

A devastating fire destroys much of the town. Reconstruction gives La Roche its characteristic stone houses.

December 1944

Battle of the Bulge

La Roche-en-Ardenne is the scene of intense combat. The town is 95% destroyed by bombings. Liberated by British troops on January 11, 1945.

1945–1960

Reconstruction

The town is rebuilt in traditional Ardennes style, preserving its medieval character while modernizing infrastructure.

The Feudal Castle

Built atop a rocky spur, the Castle of La Roche-en-Ardenne is one of Belgium’s finest examples of medieval military architecture. Its earliest foundations date back to the 9th century, but it took its current form between the 11th and 14th centuries.

This exceptional museum recounts the fierce winter battles of 1944–1945 through a collection of over 120 life-sized mannequins in period uniforms, military vehicles, weapons, and archival documents.
