1. Equipment and Posture

Even before paddling, good setup is key to power, control and comfort. This section guides you through the basics of paddle grip and correct posture in your kayak.

Paddle Grip

A correct grip ensures efficient power transfer and prevents fatigue. Here are the key points to remember:

Hand distance

Create a "box" with your arms by bending your elbows at 90 degrees while holding the paddle above your head. This is your ideal spacing.

Blade orientation

The hollow part of the blade (power face) must face you. For asymmetric blades, the longer part goes up.

Relaxed grip

Hold the paddle firmly but without excessive tension. Form an "O" with your thumb and index finger, and let the other fingers rest on the shaft.

Posture: 3-Point Contact

Your body must be one with the kayak for maximum control. Good posture, as illustrated, implies a straight back and firm contact with the seat, knees and footrests.

2. Essential Maneuvers

This section breaks down the paddle strokes that will allow you to propel yourself, steer and move with precision. Select a maneuver below to see a detailed explanation and visual demonstration.

3. Balance and Safety

Good balance is dynamic, not static. It's about being relaxed and knowing how to react. Your paddle is your best tool for maintaining stability on the water and reacting to imbalance.

Low Brace Support

This is your number one safety reflex. If you feel the kayak tipping, don't tense up. Lean into the fall and use your paddle to upright yourself.

  • 1.
Action: Slap the water surface quickly with the BACK of your blade. Keep elbows high and paddle shaft low, close to your torso.
  • 2.
Reaction: Simultaneously, give an energetic "hip snap" on the opposite side to upright the boat.
  • 3.
Most Important: Never let go of your paddle! It is your main balance tool.

We were able to enjoy this day thanks to the lady at the kayak bar! Without knowing it, we hadn't booked. She found a last minute solution! Top thanks again! Thanks to her and also to the drivers who brought us back.

Magnificent canoe descent (17km), the service is very good, we wait little even at arrival thanks to the driver and his wife who willingly answer our questions and calls. In addition, the small cafe with terrace is very pleasant. The night at the campsite was perfect.
